India’s Solar Economy Sees Locals Struggle For Jobs

‘Karnataka’s Pavagada Solar Park Fails Locals, India’s Renewable Energy Goals’

This project was commissioned by journalists Pragathi Ravi and Flavia Lopez, to visualise their essay on Pavagada’s solar economy and its shortcomings. The idea for the visual storyline was simple since it had to convey the essay on social media with minimal text. The primary image for the project depicts the exclusion faced by oppressed caste residents in Pavagada, despite the initiation of the Solar power plant. Moreover, he lands that used to be their farming fields are now fenced off and are inaccessible to them. This is what the image conveys, in stark contrast to the cattle that continues to forage on a les and less green field everyday.
